There are many documents which are provided by the school or college apart from the final result or degree after completing the education from there. A student gets a number of official papers along with the degree from the college or school after he has passed the final exam from there. These papers then help the students to further get admission in higher studies in different colleges or schools.


One of them is the Migration certificate, along with a student gets a character certificate, final result, etc from the school authorities or college authorities. The education board from where students have completed their course has to issue the migration and other important certificates. There are many education boards in India such as CBSE, ICSE, and the State Boards (for each state). All these boards provide the relevant documents related to courses that students have completed.

What is a Migration Certificate?


First of all, we have to know that what is a migration certificate. A migration certificate is a document that is issued by the college or school authorities in which the student was studying and that certifies that the student was a bonafide student of the University, having pursued a particular course in an institution under the University; and that your conduct during the Course was satisfactory and has completed a certain amount of study from my school or college and now he/she is free to join any other school or college as his/her no dues is pending.
This certificate is necessary to take admission to another school or college.


And only your education board has the authority to issue that. For Example, if you are a student of the CBSE board then only the board has the authority to issue the certificate.

How to get a migration certificate online?


The migration certificate is provided by the school or college authority on their premises. The students have to go to their respective schools or college to get the certificate. But in this digital world, when everything is becoming digital then why students have to travel to their schools or colleges.
Some boards have started providing the certificates online on their respective websites in pdf formats.

These documents can be downloaded easily and they need to be filled with the required information. After completing the form students should get the signature from the respective authority. To get a migration certificate, students should apply to the current education board (State board/CBSE/ICSE) along with the attached mark sheet and school leaving certificate.

Also, they have to pay the required fees. The council of the board will dispatch the certificate to the School’s address from where you can collect the migration certificate, duly signed by the Principal.

How to apply for a migration certificate?


There is a different process for different boards to apply for a migration certificate. Many universities have the facility that you can visit their website and apply for the migration certificate by duly filling a form. But after downloading it you may have to go and get it signed by your college principal.


For school boards, ICSE and CBSE give the facility of applying for it online. The process of getting a migration certificate will explain further in the article.


In the process of getting an ICSE board certificate, the following are the steps:

  • The office councils of respective schools are responsible for applying the migration certifications.
  • The school Heads or authorities can place a bulk order to the ICSE board to get the Migration certificate for the students who have qualified for the exams and need the certificates to get admission in higher-level courses.
  • The fee to get a Migration certificate is Rs.150. The fees should be submitted online to the council of the Board. The school will collect that from the students. After receiving the payment, the council will dispatch the certificates from the Council’s Kolkata office to the Heads of Schools, by Registered post.
  • The certificates will be kept safely by the school authorities.
  • And the certificates should be signed by the school principal.
  • Then only it should be presented to the students who have passed the examination.
  • A record of the successful distribution of migration certificates should be maintained in the school.

How to get a migration certificate from CBSE?


CBSE schools provide the certificates and other documents to the students. But this year has taught us many things and we were forced to do almost everything online be it office work or school studies or even exams as well.
In this situation, the CBSE exams are were conducted offline and the results were also declared.

But in this pandemic, how will the students collect the migration certificate along with other documents from the schools when the schools are shut. And in normal circumstances, the school will follow the same steps as the ICSE board schools to get the certificates for the students.


And even if you have lost your certificate or any other issue you can still use this method to get the certificate online that I will explain now.
For getting the certificate you need a Digi locker account. Follow these simple steps for downloading the certificate:

  • Go to the official website of DigiLocker-digilocker.gov.in or download the app on your smartphones.
  • Enter the mobile number registered with the CBSE to login.
  • An OTP would be sent to you – use that to log in to your DigiLocker account.
  • Please note- You must use the mobile number that you gave at the time of filling the CBSE application form. Students may even access their DigiLocker account by registering through their Aadhar Card number – which was provided.
  • After entering the OTP, the system would prompt the students for a security pin.
  • Use the last six digits of the CBSE Roll number as mentioned on CBSE 10th Admit Card 2020/CBSE 12th Admit Card 2020 as the security pin.
  • Once logged in, students can check and download their CBSE 12th Board Exams 2020/ CBSE 10th Board Exams 2020 Digital Migration Certificate from a list of documents on the dashboard itself.

You can follow these steps if you want to download the certificate even after few years of passing out:

  • First install the Digilocker app on your mobile phone by downloading it from the Google play store.
  • Then, create an account and get it linked with your aadhar number.
  • Next, click on the class XII certificate link and enter your roll number, year of passing, and whatever certificate you want to get and submit it.
  • * Your migration certificate will get downloaded to your phone soon.

Another way of getting the certificate is by filling a form prescribed by CBSE which can easily be downloaded from the CBSE site. The fee for applying for a migration certificate or its duplicate copy is a nominal 250/-. But in case if one wants to issue the duplicate copy urgently, then the fee would be an additional 500/- The courier charges are 25/- within Delhi/New Delhi and 35/- within India.

Migration certificate is issued only to those candidates who have passed an examination of the Board or to those who have been placed in a compartment indicating his/ her status as such in order to enable them to seek admission for a further course of study. The failed candidates should not apply for a migration certificate.
